$250 per person
$200 for accompanied minors, active duty military personnel, and first responders.
This price is for instruction only. Students are responsible for their own lodging and travel fees, and for bringing their own gear.
DATES: April 1-3, 2016 (3 full days)
MEET UP: Friday, April 1st at 5:00 AM in the Conference Room at the Holiday Inn Express Suites in Fredricksburg, TX (40 miles north of San Antonio).
LOCATION: On the first three days we will be based in Tucson and explore the two sections to the national park at first and last light. The Saguaro National Park, based on the outskirts of lovely Tucson, Arizona offers Sonoran desert views with amazing cactus landscapes and wildflowers in bloom. One place that we will be sure to visit is the Cactus Forest Loop, an eight mile drive amongst the giant saguaros in the foothills of the Rincon Mountains. The distinct shape of saguaros make for excellent silhouettes at fiery sunsets and sunrises. At Signal Hill a short hike will lead us to fascinating ancient petroglyphs that could look magical at dusk with light painting techniques.
Next, we will travel to the quaint town of Ajo where we will explore the fascinating and unique desert environment of Organ Pipe National Monument. It is rare to photograph organ pipe cactus as the park is the northern reach of this unique desert species. Hopefully orange poppies and purple lupine will be blooming on the desert floor during our visit. This Arizona excursion is a great long weekend escape from winter weather if you reside in northern climates.
EQUIPMENT SUGGESTIONS: A sturdy tripod is a necessity for good landscapes. Participants should have a working knowledge of their equipment (know which button does what!) before the workshop. I suggest a SLR camera with a wide-angle lens, (17-35mm range) and a zoom or fixed lens, like a 70-200 or 300mm. We have also had some point and shoot shooters attend as well; so don’t feel you have buy that latest and greatest. There’s a lot to learn just by seeing things.
